Attention Artistic 5th Graders:
We are having a t-shirt design contest for our fifth graders. We will wear these t-shirts for our Rock Eagle trip and at the end of the year festivities.
The theme this year is taken from the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, The Places We Will Go.”
Your drawing should include the word Creek View 2012 and 5th grade.
Your design should be in pen on an 8 ½ by 11 inch white sheet of paper.
These drawings should be submitted to me by Friday, March 2.

Hello Parents -
It’s that time of year to get our class basket together for the 2012 raffle. The date of the big event this year will be March 16th… and our theme for Ms. Shields' class this year is “Favorite Books.” By working together, we can create a FABULOUS basket with this theme.
For parents new to Creek View, basket raffle is an annual fundraiser that is a lot of fun for the entire family. The kids especially enjoy it! Each class works with a theme and gathers items to build a tempting basket loaded with goodies. You can shop for any of the items ideas below and send them in with your child to place in a laundry basket in the classroom. OR, you are welcome to make a cash contribution (average contribution per child is $5-10) and I will shop for items to fill the basket. In this event, SIZE DOES MATTER, so think of items that are “big and exciting” to kids and that will give our basket some “largeness”! If you have any personal connections to secure donations related to our basket, please let me know about it!
We are going to have a fun “Book Nook” basket with a comfy chair, book shelf, and, of course, favorite books! Item ideas that go with our theme include:
*Favorite books – all ages – think funny, classical, whatever your child enjoys to read
*eReader and/or gift cards (Amazon, Barnes & Noble).
*Comfy chair, book light, etc.
*Book sets/volumes that are sold at stores like Costco, etc.
Note: Please send in ONLY new books and items.
Please email me if you have any questions. This truly is a great Creek View tradition. We hope Ms. Shields’ class will be proudly represented and have the best basket in the entire school!
Please send in your donation by Wednesday, March 7th.
As always, your help is so very much appreciatedJ

Good Morning Parents,
Just to let you know, we will be celebrating two Fridays in a row! The Pennies for Patients put the Shields/Allen in the spotlight for raising the most money and the classes will combine to watch a movie and have pizza as our reward for the generosity and enthusiasm. The following Friday we will celebrate Valentine's Day. Here is a note from our Social Room Mother:
Kathy Shields
P.S. The deadline for Rock Eagle trip forms is this Friday. There are still several students who have not turned them in yet. Please turn then in either way so I know you have made the choice for your child not to attend, and not that you didn't know about the trip.
Hello Parents,
Our Valentine's 5th grade party for Ms. Shields' homeroom is coming up soon! Please mark the date for next week Friday, 2/10 from 11:20 - 12:20pm to come celebrate with the kids. Younger siblings and grandparents are welcome to join the festivities too! We will have games, crafts and some munchies. If you are able to help with the party and come a bit early for setup, please let me know as all help is appreciated:-)
Thanks so much!
Julea Mead - social room mom
jamesjulea@aol.com
P.S. Ms. Shields and Ms. Allen sent home some info soon about the Valentine's card exchange along with a class list of names. Students participating in the exchange should provide a card for all HR students and may bring as needed, cards for friends in Allen's HR. Boxes or bags to hold cards should be brought in and taken home the day of the party ONLY. They have no room to store them.

Dear Parents,
Mrs. Shields' class is having their 2nd trip to the Science Lab on Wednesday, January 18 at 9:00am to review constructive and destructive forces. We need 4 volunteers to run centers. Volunteers must be volunteer trained (now available online via the school web site), and younger siblings cannot attend. No prior science knowledge is needed to volunteer. Volunteers need to plan to arrive 20 minutes prior to the lab start time, and plan to stay after 5-10 minutes to help prepare for the next class. So you would need to arrive around 8:40am and plan on staying until around 10:10am. The total time commitment is approximately 90 minutes. Please email me if you are able to help on the 18th.
Happy New Year!

Greetings Creek View Parents/Guardians,
Each year Fulton County provides an opportunity for students to showcase their technical knowledge and skills by participating in the annual Fulton County Technology Competition. We will be selecting two teams to represent our school in each category. A team may consist of a single individual or a pair of students. If your child is interested in entering a project, Creek View will be delighted to accept their entries submitted no later than January 6, 2012. You will be notified by January 13 if their project has been submitted to represent Creek View. There will be a Creek View competition the first Tuesday in February for all students or classrooms who would like to participate. More information will be available soon.
Your grade 3-5 child is invited to stay after school on Monday, November 21, 2011 for a 45 minute information session in the Media Center. Students will learn about the categories and technical expectations for the Tech Fair. They will have an opportunity to view the work of past winners. If they cannot attend but are interested in participating, please return this form and select the appropriate box. This will give us a rough idea of how many students would like to enter the competition. All projects must be created by the students at home. Parents may offer some assistance. Tech Specialist, Bill Haynes or Teachers, Kathy Shields or Heidi Holcomb can answer your child’s technical questions or suggest web tools to use to create projects. emailed on 10-16 for Julea Mead, Social Room Mom
Hello Parents of Ms. Shields' Class -
My name is Julea Mead (Connor's mom) and I am looking forward to serving as the Social Coordinator this year for our 5th grade class. We have a terrific class and there are many exciting and special activities planned for our 5th graders this year including graduation activities and parties!! In order to best keep you in the loop, I need to have your correct email address. Only a handful of parents responded to Ms. Shields' earlier email and sent me their email address for our class distribution list, so
please, please email me so I can keep you informed throughout the school year! My email is
jamesjulea@aol.com and let me know your preferred email address and child's name.
The first couple of items coming up are the 5th grade Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on October 26th and the Fall Festival on November 5th. Below is the info about the luncheon - and, you guessed it, we need some volunteers to bring in some yummy treats and help out with the lunch clean-up. I will forward information about the Fall Festival in the coming few days.
Thanks again in advance for your help and participation! We are going to have a great school year and make it memorable for our kiddos as they complete their last year at Creek View!

TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON: POTLUCK
Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Dear Parents,
The 5th grade classes at Creek View Elementary will be in charge of hosting the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon (TAL) to be held on Wednesday, October 26. This event is highly treasured by the teachers, and it gives them a pleasant break from the daily grind of the lunchroom, not to mention providing us the opportunity to thank them for all that they do for our children.
At this time, we are soliciting donations for this luncheon. Because we have an enthusiastic group of eaters, i.e., significant male population, and since all of the staff at CVES is invited to attend,5th grade will need to plan for a total of 130 people. Ms. Shield’s class has been assigned the following:
- 2 desserts
- 2 (12 pack) sodas
- 3 main dishes
- 1 side dish
- 1 salad
- 2 clean up volunteers (1-2 pm)
Salads can be green, pasta, fruit or vegetable tray. Desserts should be cookies, brownies or something pre-cut, for easy handling. Please bring portions that are enough to feed about 20 people.
The items need to be dropped off in the front office by 9:00 am on October 26th and should be in platters, dishes, etc. that do not have to be returned, if at all possible. However, if you do decide to send in items that need to be returned, they should be clearly marked with your name on them. These items will be cleaned and made available the day of the event outside the PTA office to be picked up between 2-4pm. Anything left after 4pm will be stored in the Creek View kitchen on the PTA shelf.
Please let me know via email at jamesjulea@aol.com if you are interested in helping out with the luncheon and/or the items you would like to donate. The theme which has been selected for 5thgrade is Potluck, so please feel free to use your creativity in preparing the type of food item you would like to bring.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to call or e-mail me.
Thank you!

Hello Parents,
I am writing to let you know that my classes were just posted yesterday to eSchool so I will be organizing the categories and posting some grades, finally. Aside from the initial grades we had a number of class assignments this week plus a quiz and a story test. They will be sent home next Thursday in the CVES folders.
SpellingCity.com now has the spelling lists loaded for the next few weeks so students can practice online as well as take practice tests. They will also be able to take the test online in school. The direct link to Ms. Shields lists is: http://www.spellingcity.com/sendkathy/
Both groups will be finishing their novels next week. There will be another quiz Thursday and a Test Friday. They should be reading several chapters every night, If you don't see their novel you should be concerned. We will also have a short grammar quiz on Wednesday covering subject, predicate and conjunctions which we will review Monday and Tuesday.
I provided a list of potential interview questions for all students in a stapled packet. Students are to write 5 original questions and select 10 from the list. Next, they will interview a relative and record the answers on a separate sheet. Together, we will fill in the organizers during class following the interviews. They should complete their interview no later than next Friday 9/16. They may use phone, email or face-to-face to conduct their interview. The information will be the raw material for a narrative style biography essay. It will be written in school.
On an unrelated note, I received information about science activities for K-2 students at GaTech on Saturday mornings. I have been involved in workshops with his group and feel confident it would be a wonderful experience for your child. If you're interested: http://www.ceismc.gatech.edu/kidsclub
As always, please email me with any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful weekend.
