Writer Workshop Procedures

 Toasted Cheese provides a different writing prompt for every day.  It may give you some bright ideas.

Writers Workshop Schedule

 

 

 10-15      minutes  Mini Lesson
 20-30     minutes Independent Writing
 10           minutes Conferencing During Independent
5-10         minutes Closing/Sharing

 
Mini-lessons - whole group. Explicit instruction on a specific writing technique taught in a short 5-10 minute period which students will be expected to apply during their independent writing practice..

  • Procedures & Routines
  • Strategies
  • Skills
  • Author's Craft
 

Independent Writing

  • Students write daily.
  • Students determine the topics they will write about.
  • Students use a writer’s journal.
  • Students are self-paced.
  • Teacher’s role: monitor, encourage, conference, and support.
  • “When you’re done, you’ve just begun.”

 

Conference during independent writing time.

  • Students seek responses from their partners.
  • Teachers conference with individual students and/or small groups.
 

Sharing is done with the whole group to end the Writer’s Workshop.

  • This is an integral part to the writer’s workshop.
  • Students are given opportunities to share their writing, highlight strategies, share literature  and/or share an idea from their writer’s jounal. 
  • This time also allows for students to practice presenting to a group.
