Readers Workshop

The purpose of Reader's Workshop is to cultivate independent readers.  

There are 7 strategies all readers must be able to apply to text in order to read and understand content.

 

  1. Making Connections to human experience

  2. Creating mental imagery 

  3. Making Inferences/Drawing Conclusions

  4. Asking Questions  

  5. Identifying what is important

  6. Synthesizing

  7. Self-motoring Comprehension and making meaning

 

 

Workshop Schedule

 

 

 10-15 minutes  Teacher Read Aloud &
 Mini Lesson
 20 minutes  Guided Reading &
 Independent Reading 
 10 minutes  Closing Meeting

 

 

Read Aloud: The teacher selects text and reads it aloud to the class whole group. The teacher models best practices in reading.  Students are actively listening and observing the strategies the teacher uses while reading.

Guided Reading: The teacher works with a small leveled group of students. Each student has his/her own text.  The teacher works with the group to target a specific reading strategy or skill.

Independent Reading: During guided reading the remaining students in the class are reading independently. Students to apply the strategies learned in whole group and small group lessons. Students select text based on their reading level and use sticky notes to record their reflections. At the end of independent reading, the teacher will meet with 3-4 students individually to discuss their reflections and record an assessment of how they are applying the strategies.

 

Conference Log: Track student-teacher meetings and log observations.
